Frequently asked questions
Bettercare has always provided free coursebooks for self-managed learning online, with print editions available for sale. Several other aspects of our work have changed over the years.

- Can I get CPD points from Bettercare?

- When are the books updated?
- Who runs Bettercare?
- Can I re-use Bettercare content?
Do you still offer exams and certificates?
Unfortunately Bettercare no longer provides exams or certificates.
Until 2020, Bettercare provided exam papers to study-group facilitators, who ran the exams. Bettercare then sent PDF certificates for those who achieved 80 per cent in the exam. This was a free service that our small, volunteer team is no longer able to provide.
Can I get CPD points from Bettercare?
Bettercare does not provide CPD points itself. Bettercare publishes learning material, which other institutions may use in their own CPD-accredited programmes.
Where can I buy your printed books?
For how to buy printed books, please see our ‘Buy Bettercare books’ page.
When are the books updated?
We aim to update our most popular books every couple of years. This depends on available funding, and available capacity by our volunteer contributors.
Who runs Bettercare?
Bettercare is led on a volunteer basis by Prof Dave Woods and Arthur Attwell, who are based in Cape Town, South Africa.
Bettercare is managed by Arthur’s company, Electric Book Works. EBW manages the website, book production, and book sales. Modest revenue from sales help to cover web-hosting and maintenance costs.
Prof Woods is Bettercare’s editor-in-chief, and oversees all book content, in collaboration with volunteer contributors around South Africa and beyond.
Can I re-use Bettercare content?
You may re-use Bettercare content for non-commercial purposes, as long as:
- you don’t change the content and
- you always include a reference and the ‘bettercare.co.za’ web address.
For detailed legal wording, see the Creative Commons BY-NC-ND licence, which we apply to our books.
If you’re not sure whether your re-use is allowed, please contact us.
